Dio, che «abita una luce inaccessibile», parla nello stesso tempo all'uomo col linguaggio di tutto il cosmo: «Infatti, dalla creazione del mondo in poi, le sue perfezioni invisibili possono essere contemplate con l'intelletto nelle opere da lui compiute, come la sua eterna potenza e divinità». Questa indiretta e imperfetta conoscenza, opera dell'intelletto che cerca Dio per mezzo delle creature at...traverso il mondo visibile, non è ancora «visione del Padre». «Dio nessuno l'ha mai visto», scrive san Giovanni per dar maggior rilievo alla verità secondo cui «proprio il Figlio unigenito, che è nel seno del Padre, lui lo ha rivelato». Questa «rivelazione» manifesta Dio nell'insondabile mistero del suo essere --uno e trino-- circondato di «luce inaccessibile». Mediante questa «rivelazione» di Cristo, tuttavia, conosciamo Dio innanzitutto nel suo rapporto di amore verso l'uomo: nella sua «filantropia». È proprio qui che «le sue perfezioni invisibili» diventano in modo particolare «visibili», incomparabilmente più visibili che attraverso tutte le altre «opere

da lui compiute»: esse diventano visibili in Cristo e per mezzo di Cristo, per il tramite delle sue azioni e parole e, infine, mediante la sua morte in croce e la sua risurrezione.

God "dwells in unapproachable light", the same man he speaks of the whole of the cosmos: "In fact, the world's creation onward, his invisible nature can be understood and perceived in what he has made , as his eternal power and Godhead. "This indirect and imperfect knowledge, by the intellect seeking God by means of creatures through the visible world, is not "vision of the Father." "God no one has ever seen," writes St. John in order to stress the truth that "the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him." This "making known" reveals God in the mystery of his being - Triune - surrounded by "unapproachable light". Through this "revelation" of Christ, however, we know God first in his relationship of love for man: in his "philanthropy." It is precisely here that "His invisible nature" becomes in a special way "visible," incomparably more visible than through all other "things that have been made": it becomes visible in Christ and through Christ, through his actions and words, and finally, through his death on the cross and his resurrection.
